Turns out Cerberus was right - there is a cure, and one much easier than anyone would have imagined. Modify a few proteins, swap a few chemicals, and the bacteria burns away like a husk in acid. At least, that’s what Chakwas tells me, though I think she made the analogy for my benefit.
